For folks who attended the University of Georgia, or just spent some time in Athens on game day, Steverino's brings name recognition to its new location in downtown Duluth.
In fact, co-owner Henry Harrington estimates that the name of the now-closed Athens eatery has contributed to about a quarter of its business since opening in April.
This new version of Steverino's has carried over favorite pizzas and sub sandwiches from the once-popular location near UGA's campus, with the help of Jim Cellini, who opened it in Athens in 1974. With those items, some smart menu updates and a fresh look, it's a welcome addition to Main Street, no matter your allegiance.
SLICES AND SUBS
Pizza and sub sandwiches make up the core of Steverino's menu, which is rounded out by calzones, burgers and salads. But before digging into them, the appetizers are worth checking out. Among them: thick-cut homemade chips, which also are an option as a side for the sandwiches and burgers, in addition to fries and pasta salad. The delicious steak and cheese sub is just like we remembered – a soft hoagie roll (choose white or wheat) stuffed with shaved sirloin steak, melted provolone cheese and grilled onions and peppers. The pasta salad is fresh and tasty. The grilled cheese sandwich, which is on the kid's menu, is toasted without being greasy.
Pizzas come by the slice, or in small, medium and large sizes. There are nearly a dozen specialty pizzas, including our choice, the Steverino's Supremo. The pepperoni, Italian sausage, green peppers, black olives, onions and mushrooms blended together perfectly with the cheese, sauce and crisp crust. Try a baked apple pizza for dessert.
FAMILY FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE
Steverino's features exposed brick walls and a faux finish, plus two flat screen TVs that allowed us to watch Wimbledon while dining there earlier this month. The tables are topped with black-and-white checked tablecloths. There's outdoor seating and room to expand for private parties.
