Abigail Breslin's "Kit Kittredge: An American Girl" (opening at North Point Market today and expanding to other theaters July 2) is a story about a flesh-and-blood little girl that's inspired by a real (but not alive) doll you can buy at the American Girl store. But there are plenty of actual dolls in movies. Here are five worth watching:
1. "Planet of the Apes" (1968) —- In a cave, Charlton Heston finds a human doll that talks.
2. "Wait Until Dark" (1967) —- The thugs terrorizing Audrey Hepburn are after the heroin that's stuffed inside a little doll.
3. "Lars and the Real Girl" (2007) —- In this strange but charming comedy, Ryan Gosling plays a psychologically affected young man who has a life-size doll as a girlfriend.
4. "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" (1962) —- Before she grows up into Bette Davis, Baby Jane is a snotty vaudeville star who has a popular doll named after her.
5. "Trilogy of Terror" (1975) —- A three-story TV movie that includes one terrific tale in which Karen Black gets chased by a spear-wielding African tribal doll.
