The Nov. 13 attack was one of several coordinated assaults across Paris. Among those killed at the concert hall was Nick Alexander, the band's merchandise manager, along with three people from their record label - Thomas Ayad, Marie Mosser and Manu Perez. (Source: LATimes.com)
In an interview released by VICE on Wednesday, guitarist Eden Galindo said he thought for a moment that the PA system was crackling but quickly realized it was gunfire.
Galindo said band members were not sure if they were targets of the gunfire. He said a crew member signaled to him and the other musicians to run from the scene while the gunman was reloading his weapon.
While some of the musicians exited through a door near the stage, the band’s bass player, Matt McJunkins, said he found himself in a room full of fans who were also escaping the gunfire.
“From my perspective I see the shooting, I see the pops go off, the lights flashing … and I have to make the decision: Do I really want to run across the stage or do I want to go in this room, and hope for the best,” McJunkins recalled.
McJunkins said the gunfire went on for quite awhile.
“The gunfire got closer. It went on for … 10-15 minutes. It just didn’t stop, and then it would stop and there was a sense of relief and then it would start up again.”
The band members who ran outside said they ran over dead bodies in front of the concert hall.
The whole band said they intended to move forward as a group, in memory of those who did not survive.
Jesse Hughes, frontman and band co-founder, said Eagles of Death Metal wants to be the first band to play at the Bataclan theater when it reopens.
“I cannot wait to get back to Paris. I want to play again,” he said in the interview. “I was there when it went silent. Our friends went there to see rock 'n' roll and died. I want to go back there and live.”
