Marc Bamuthi Joseph's time at Morehouse College serves as the inspiration for one of the works in Atlanta Ballet's "20/20 Visionary."
Originally created in 2010, “Home in 7” uses Joseph’s poems as the backdrop for the choreography of Amy Seiwert and music of Daniel Bernard Roumain.
Seiwert was tasked with creating a ballet that would reflect the city of Atlanta, despite the fact that she’d never been to the city. Once on board, Joseph began to conduct research and reflect on his years at Morehouse.
He created seven poems for the show.
“I attended Morehouse in the years leading up to the staging of the Olympic Games,” Joseph said, via press release. “Beyond my own time here, I honor the historic and present role that the city has had in shaping American culture and wanted to celebrate the textures of the city that you don’t necessarily see in the Hartsfield postcard shop.”
The AJC recently visited the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre to talk to Joseph about his role in the production.

Joseph’s work is just one of three works that will be featured in the show.
“Boiling Point” will showcase the “demanding athleticism of dance” and the world premiere of “Playground” by acclaimed British choreographer Darrell Grand Moultrie will evoke nostalgia for the “playfulness of childhood memories,” according to a press release.
