Five Atlanta arts organizations are breathing a little easier after each receiving three-year, $30,000 grants from the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation of New York.

The recipients are Dashboard Co-op, which does performance and visual art; the Eyedrum Gallery of Art and Music, which provide space for a variety of art forms; the dance troupe gloATL; Living Walls, the City Speaks, which is well-known for murals on city buildings; and The Lucky Penny, which promotes a variety of contemporary performances, artist talks and visual arts.

This is the inaugural year of the Rauschenberg Foundation’s SEED grants to encourage the arts in five cities that have burgeoning art scenes, according to the organization. The money is directed to operating capital, which is often the most difficult area for arts organizations to raise money.

“It’s somewhat of a surprise, and it’s very exciting” said Alexandra Parrish, the communications director for Living Walls.

The grant will help relieve some of the pressure on the budget.

Many arts organizations have suffered in the recession as donations and attendance at events have fallen.

The Rauschenberg Foundation said the grant recipients were nominated by partners in Atlanta and the other cities.

“Atlanta is an exceptional city,” wrote Christa Carr, a spokeswoman for the foundation. “We are proud to be part of your growing and flourishing art scene.”
