Private Quarters: Spacious Midtown loft with city views

A love for the Rolling Stones drew David Oakey and Cindi Marshall Oakey together in 1997, and brought a British invasion, design-wise, to their Midtown Atlanta loft.

Privacy may be hard to find in the condo, but the open floor plan makes it easy to feel like you're part of any action, inside or out.

Adopting the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi, which embraces materials and their imperfections as-is, homeowners Cindi and David Oakey have largely left their Midtown Atlanta loft as they found it in 2004. They did add the Christopher Moulder light fixture, fondly called "Grande Orbit," in 2005, along with much-needed remote blinds on the loft's massive wall of windows.

Architectural delights abound for David Oakey in the view, including seeing the similarities between the modern Bank of America Building rising behind the old steeple of the Saint Mark United Methodist Church.

In 2009, David and Cindi Oakey redesigned the patio area with a teak raised floor and Tropitone furniture. Now, they fully enjoy spectacular views of the city of Atlanta from the spot.

David and Cindi Oakey describe the interior design of their two-story Midtown loft as "minimal modern." After seeing other penthouse lofts in which homeowners added built-ins and walls, the Oakeys are determined to maintain the integrity of the exposed loft design.

The modern, open design and Whisper White (Behr) walls in David and Cindi Oakey's loft is simple and minimalist, but pops of color, like the yellow in their dining room chairs, create excitement in the space.

Exposed beams, ductwork and open spaces are true to the loft design, so David and Cindi Oakey use carpet tiles and area rugs from Flor to create intimate "rooms" in the spacious floor plan.

Brought together by their love of the Rolling Stones, the bedroom decor, with its Union Jack carpet tiles, is a nod to the British Invasion in the design and David and Cindi Oakey's rock and roll roots.

Design consultant and homeowner David Oakey began collecting unique "artsy" chairs to use in photoshoots for modular carpet tiles. The "sculptural art" of the award-winning Rainbow chair adds vibrancy amid the neutral tones in other furniture.

The walls, painted Behr's Whisper White, in David and Cindi Oakey's Atlanta loft provide a blank canvas to showcase their houseful of vibrant art, including pieces from Miami-based Romero Britto, British artist Damien Hirst and Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood.

Homeowners David and Cindi Oakey are huge fans of classic rock and roll. When David learned that Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood was also an accomplished contemporary artist, he began to collect Wood's work. Upstairs in their Midtown loft, the Oakeys showcase a series of six etchings.

The home of David and Cindi Oakey is infused with art and rock and roll. In their upstairs loft, their two passions meet in this "ginormous" portrait of Bob Dylan by Rolling Stones guitarist and British artist Ronnie Wood.

David and Cindi Oakey enjoy the upstairs loft, complete with pool table and spectacular views of Midtown Atlanta, in their modern 3,800-square-foot, two-story residence. David Oakey is founder of David Oakey Designs, and Cindi Marshall Oakey serves as the company's trend analyst.

A wet bar upstairs makes for easy entertaining and is a step away from David and Cindi Oakey's penthouse patio with its sweeping city views of Midtown Atlanta.

Exposed pipes, a staircase with steel cables and the fireplace are key design elements in the Midtown condo.

Like the rest of the loft, Cindi Oakey's office is minimal in design. However, here she decorates the two walls with art and photography that are "true reflections of my inner spirit," she said.

The studded stair base creates a cool effect in the Midtown condo. Minimal accessories include book on rock-and-roll musicians.
