Private Quarters: Rustic charm found throughout Buckhead cottage

The all-seasons sunroom is the homeowners' favorite room. An island with new cabinetry was added previously to the 1950-built cottage, creating a bridge between the kitchen and dining room. After Erin and Patrick Connolly bought the home in 2012, they installed GE appliances and honed Crema Marfil marble countertops from Atlanta Tile and Stone.

The brick floor, which is original to the 1950 home, gives that extra little bit of detail and makes the house feel cozy, said Patrick. A working brick oven right now serves as a decorative niche.

In the dining area, homeowner and mother of two Erin Connolly recovered chairs from Lee Industries with a gray Crypton fabric, which she says is "indestructible to children." A dining bench by Furniture Classics also tucks under the table.

Erin and Patrick Connolly's dog Murphy enters the detached sunroom, with its individually laid stone walls and tongue-and-groove paneling, which extends onto the ceiling. This room, which was an addition that paid special attention to the Buckhead cottage's original architecture, sold the couple on the home. A glass-topped iron table from Scott Antique Market is favorite gathering spot for the family.

Erin and Patrick Connolly have fitted their upstairs master bedroom with a bed by Ballard Designs and bedding by Pom Pom and Pine Cone Hill. The room is painted in Benjamin Moore's Revere Pewter.

Built-in storage in the master bedroom was included when this Buckhead home was built by Earl McMillen in 1950. Over the years, the closet systems inside the cupboards have been updated, but the doors are original.

For daughter Annie, 21 months, Erin Connolly wanted to create a peaceful room with soft colors, which includes Benjamin Moore's Feather Down on the walls. A cozy chair provides a perfect place for reading bedtime stories and owl artwork, given to the family by Erin's mother, hangs above the crib.

Neutral colors dominate Erin and Patrick Connolly's home, but in daughter Hunter's room, Erin wanted to add a little color. A blue monogrammed headboard and custom-made curtains with a punch of coral brighten the walls, which are painted in Benjamin Moore's Feather Down.

The unique bookcase in daughter Hunter's room belonged to her mother, Erin Connolly, when she was a young girl.

In the upstairs guest room above the garage addition, linens from Bella Notte create a cozy retreat to welcome visitors to Patrick and Erin Connolly's Buckhead home.

In the living room, Erin Connolly's coffee table from Bernhardt, with its leather top and metal legs, is kid-friendly. "Everything wipes off it, " she says. A sofa and chair, also from Bernhardt, and a gray armoire, from Redford House, complete the room.

A stack of books found at Scott Antique Market complement the rustic mantle and botanical prints above the living room fireplace in Patrick and Erin Connolly's home.

"One of the things we love are the iron windows in the kitchen, " says homeowner Erin Connolly. "We're lucky we have those original ones."

Tongue-and-groove detailing continues on the stairs leading to the second floor.

A quaint garden shed that is similar in style to the main home holds yard tools for now. Homeowners Patrick and Erin Connolly plan to convert it into a playhouse for their two young daughters.

Wood beam ceilings provide classic cottage style and architectural interest in the living room.

The Dutch farm door is a unique element that Erin and Patrick Connolly love in their Earl McMillen-built Buckhead cottage. While Dutch doors like this aren't common today, Patrick says being able to open only the top half of the door is a functional feature, especially for a family with small children and dogs.

The bedrooms offer floor-to-ceiling closets and drawers that were part of the 1950 home's original design.

Erin and Patrick Connolly, along with their daughters Hunter, 4, and Annie, 21 months, bought their 2,700-square-foot Buckhead cottage in 2012. Patrick is vice president of home services for Ansley Atlanta Real Estate, and Erin co-owns B. Barganier Interiors.
