Private Quarters: Photos of Amanda and Andrew Cogar's home in Atlanta's Inman Park.

It took a bit of imagination to bring a home in historic Inman Park — Atlanta’s first planned community — up to modern times. Even the updates were out of date when Andrew and Amanda Cogar, shown with their daughter, 11-month-old Edie Belle, purchased the home.

Edie Belle's nursery is light and airy. The paintings in the room were done by family friends and a chair sits next to her crib.

“We remained true to the original footprint of the house,” Amanda says. “It’s a small house that lives large. It’s a charming and small little house that’s great for a young family, which is what we are.” Shown here: The dining room.

"I love the look of the farmhouse sink," Amanda says. "Usually, I don't like when it's one big basin. I find it hard to use. The one we've got has a little divider in between. You still get the great aesthetic of the farmhouse sink, but with a functional divider. "

"The wine rack, base cabinet and window seat were made to match the cabinets. We wanted them to have a built-in feel," Andrew says.

The Cogars' design consultant: Jimmy Stanton of Stanton Home Furnishings. Pieces from the store include the leather ottoman and oversized chair in the living room and dresser in the master bedroom, as well as pillows and blankets.

The framed drafting tools came from Andrew's late grandfather, an eengineer from General Electric. Andrew, 39, is an architect and partner with Historical Concepts.

Four fireplaces in the home have their colored original tile. Shown is the master bedroom fireplace, with its yellow tile.

“There is a benefit to having your homes closer together,” Amanda says. “Here, you’re kind of forced to be close to your neighbors, and it’s kind of a good thing. You can’t not say hello. I have whole conversations sitting on my porch, and talking to neighbors on their porch. It’s more old-fashioned, and I think that helps build the community, which makes Inman Park so great.”
