Modern touches in 1920s Midtown Victorian

Philip and Alejandra Martinez Dunphy's home in west Midtown was built in the 1920s. During renovations they toned down some of the Victorian-era colors in favor of an earthy color palette.

The Dunphys added many eco-friendly touches to the home. The cabinets are manufactured from Forest Stewardship Council-certified wood that is formaldehyde-free. The countertops have the look of marble but are actually easier-to-maintain granite. The back-splash is made of recycled glass and plastics.

Philip and Alejandra Martinez Dunphy's home in west Midtown was built in the 1920s. They added many eco-friendly elements, such as barrels to collect rainwater for use in the vegetable garden. Another distinguishing feature is the 12-foot front porch.

The couple kept some of the original features of the house, including the fireplaces and trim. They also painted and refinished an original Eames chair.

The gold-leaf mirror in the hallway of the home is an heirloom from Alejandra Dunphy's mother.

A mercury glass vase on the mantel in the living room adds sparkle to the space.

A retro-style recliner and ottoman create a comfortable arrangement in the Dunphys' living room.

The art room for the Dunphys' three children has plenty of natural light from the windows. A mobile of branches helps bring nature into the home.

The couple researched Victorian era homes and discovered heavy use of reds and greens.

On the side of the house, geometrical patterns were used on the shingles.

The master bedroom has a vaulted ceiling. A pedestal chair with a built-in side table holds tablets and laptops.

The gold curtains add warm tones in the nursery for the Dunphys' 2-year-old twins. The mini Eames chair adds to the retro vibe. The carpet is manufactured from recycled plastic bottles and has a Green Label Plus designation from the Carpet and Rug Institute.
