Maggie Gerlacher relaxes in the formal living room of her three-bedroom townhome in Buckhead. She took inspiration for her home from a fellow Buckhead fixture, the ultra-luxurious St. Regis hotel and its 1940s art deco style.

Soft earth tones, blues and greens and hints of platinum/silver with iridescent gold tones, start off in the formal living room originally intended as a dining room.

Maggie and Tom Gerlacher converted the traditional dining room to an upscale conversational room to offset the contemporary open floor plan of the combined kitchen, family and dining nook with the help of Don Easterling, an interior designer with Mathews Furniture Galleries and Design, and his partner Nina Nash.

Maggie Gerlacher's favorite Baker chair, bought from a warehouse sale, and its curvy, art deco lines of polished dark cherry wood contrasting with silk-cream fabric and silver-dotted seaweed pattern inspired the 1940s glamour feel of the formal living room.

Don Easterling and Nina Nash created an intimate conversational nook for the Gerlachers by selecting a handmade wrought iron chandelier by Currey and Company and a lovely wood art deco inspired buffet by Bernhardt.

The color scheme carries through the open floor plan and connects the two rooms at opposite ends (with the open gallery kitchen, its stainless Viking appliances and large granite island, in between). Leather bar stools by Bernhardt. Pendants by Visual Comfort.

Each floor has a wall of windows with French doors opening onto a private deck or patio. "We love to sit out there among the trees and in the garden, and it's all private, which is not typical of townhomes," Maggie Gerlacher said.

Bookshelves display Maggie Gerlacher's collections of books with shells and other sea-life from her travels.

Favorite interior design feature: The custom carved 8-foot-by-6-foot floor mirror in the breakfast area, which looks as if the wall opens up into another space while bringing in more light, Maggie said.

The influence of the ultra-luxury St. Regis hotel is seen throughout the home, especially in the master bedroom, with its glass chandelier, plum velvet tufted chaise by Sherrill Furniture and collection of pieces by Atlanta artists.

The master bedroom features a mahogany sleigh bed with Mottega glass lamps and original artwork by local Atlanta artist Brent Baker, all from Mathews Furniture.
