Continuing education classes fun for older adults

Continuing education courses taught at Kennesaw State and Emory University are a hit with adults over 50.

Janet Edwards also takes a continuing education class. Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes, OLLIs for short, are on 119 college campuses across 48 states. Georgia has branches at Kennesaw and Emory University.

Lilly Mendoza of Powder Springs has taught Spanish in middle and high schools. But teaching older students is more fun, she says, because they're eager to learn.

Mendoza teaches at Kennesaw State through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, a nationwide continuing education program aimed at people 50 and older.

Vikki Hughes takes a Spanish class at Kennesaw because "I like the way it sounds," she says. "I like the food. I like the people."

Jane O'Hara (left), Hubert Wieland and Hughes wait for their entrees. For mature adults, continuing education courses are very affordable. Fees for OLLI classes fees range from $29 to $129 at Kennesaw State and students can take as many as they want.

The Spanish class makes Hughes hungry for Mexican food, so she and some classmates go to Los Reyes restaurant in Kennesaw for lunch.
