Filmed in 2012, Nina stars actress Zoe Saldana as Simone and David Oyelowo (Selma) as Simone's assistant/manager, Clifton Henderson.
Several other performers had been associated with the role of Simone prior to Saldana and the decision to have her star caused an uproar among Simone's fans when it was announced.
Even celebs got in on it with India Arie and Aretha Franklin expressing their concern about the choice. Arie went so far as to suggest that actress, Viola Davis be considered for the role .
Mostly, people were upset because Saldana, an actress of Latin descent, needed extensive hair and makeup to look like the afro-wearing, deep brown-skinned Simone.
From the looks of Twitter, the sentiment continues.
The controversial biopic focuses on Simone's years living in France after leaving the states in a swirl of political and personal upheaval.
Nina is directed by first-timer Cynthia Mort who in 2014 filed a lawsuit against the production company for breach of contract .
Simone Kelly, Nina Simone's daughter, has also expressed concern about the biopic and invested her time and effort in the Netflix documentary, "What Happened, Miss Simone?" which was released in June.
