Each year, Tybee Island hosts veterans and their families for a special weekend around Veteran’s Day called, “Tybee Salutes Heroes.”
Vacation rental companies including Natural Retreats, a destination travel company , will be offering up to 10 homes to these families for a free, three-day getaway, joining others in the effort to give veterans and their families a nice relaxing getaway.
Active and retired military personnel are invited to bring their families to Tybee Island for a weekend full of activities, including the American Legion and Tybee Salutes Heroes Parade at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 14.
Sharon Shaver, co-chair of Tybee Salutes Heroes, said the event has gained traction over the last few years. This is the second year that the offering of vacation homes has been an island-wide event. Shaver said organizers hope to accommodate all veterans and active military who fill out the application to stay in a rental property, adding she thinks as many as 100 vacation homes could be available if need be.
“We have a lot of families with vacation rental properties on board and we have the rental property companies on board and we have the city on board. Our ultimate goal is to fill up the island,” said Shaver with co-chair of Tybee Salutes Heroes. “It’s really about the veterans. It’s about active military. We have to honor them and let them know how important they are and how much we appreciate them.”
