Atlantans line up for release of Nike Olympic themed sneaker

The $140 retro shoe was designed to honor the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and includes details like the teal and gold colors from the official Atlanta Olympics logo and a peach on the tongue of the shoe.

While it was scheduled to arrive at local retailers on July 19, it showed up Aug. 5 at Nike in Lenox Square where sneakerheads and collectors of Olympic memorabilia all arrived early in the morning to wait in line.

Shannon "Hollywood Kid" Crawford, 42, waited about three hours to score a pair of the sneaks. Crawford says he is not a sneakerhead, but more of a sneaker enthusiast who also happens to have graduated from Morehouse College in 1996.

"I thought of any number of excuses to give myself to buy these," he said, noting that he wouldn't wear them unless it was a special occasion.

It is the first pair of SC Trainers he owns and while the price is more than he would usually pay for sneakers, they were not super expensive, he said.

David Gordon said he came out of sneaker retirement for the new kicks.

"I used to do this a lot," said Gordon, 37, who lives on the Westside. "I sort of retired but I am Atlanta born and raised. When I saw this pair was coming out, with the peach on the tongue, I said I would come out of retirement for this."

Gordon, who owned his last pair of SC Trainers when he was in eighth grade wasted no time in testing out the shoes. "I have them on my feet right now," he said.

Nike handed out wristbands equal to the number of shoes they had available, but obviously could not guarantee sizes.

Shoppers were allowed in the store five at a time and store reps would call the stockroom with sizes for the next five customers on deck so the shoes would be waiting when they stepped into the store.

The late crowd, who were still lined up after 11 a.m., probably didn't have a good shot of getting their sizes, but still may have been able to get the shoes which have already popped up on eBay at bids ranging from $189 to $1,300.
