Columbia, S.C. -- South Carolina is Trump Country.

Update 8:42 p.m.: Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush has ended his bid for the White House. Bush, who failed to crack three in any of the early-voting states, said he got the message.

"I’m proud of the campaign we've run to unify the country," Bush said. "But the people of Iowa and New Hampshire and South Carolina have spoken and I really respect their decision. Tonight I am suspending my campaign."

The New York billionaire has won the 2016 Republican presidential primary here, as The Associated Press and several major television networks called the race shortly before 7:30 p.m.

The projection comes with just 1 percent of the vote in, but that is apparently enough to declare Trump the winner of his second state. After winning the New Hampshire primary, Trump is gaining steam headed into Tuesday's Nevada caucus and the March 1 SEC Primary.

The fight for second place was well under way, too, with Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio neck-and-neck and Jeb Bush, John Kasich and Ben Carson all well behind.
