Days remaining in the legislative session: 18
The House and Senate convene at 10 a.m. today, with a handful of closely watched bills before them in their chambers or committees.
The 2017 proposed state budget is up in committee in the House, while the chamber takes up HB 927, which would add two justices to the Georgia Supreme Court and re-direct some of the cases that go before that bench.
Among bills up in the Senate is one targeting the Georgia High School Association. SB 309 would prohibit public high schools from being part of associations that refuse to allow students to wear their faith on their sleeve. Literally.
In 2015, a West Forsyth County high school runner was disqualified after wearing a white head band with “Isaiah 40:30-31” written across the front. A GHSA official has been quoted as saying the student was warned that the head band, regardless of the verse, was not allowed and was disqualified after the runner decided to wear it anyway.
