Talk radio is weighing in on the Republican race for U.S. Senate in Georgia.

The campaign of Jack Kingston, the congressman from Savannah, is about to cut loose with an endorsement from Sean Hannity, the Fox News talk show host also heard daily on WSB Radio. The statement from Hannity:

"I have known Jack Kingston for 20 years. He's a solid Ronald Reagan Republican and my choice in the Georgia Senate race. Jack will join the conservative coalition in the U.S. Senate."

This comes a week after Sarah Palin endorsed one of Kingston's rivals, Karen Handel. And we know that Eric Erickson -- another WSB Radio voice -- has long been a Handel fan. So Hannity's endorsement of Kingston is important in several respects:

First, Hannity's name is extremely familiar to Republican voters in drive-time metro Atlanta -- an important fact for a coastal congressman still trying to get his name out in vote-rich north Georgia.

The Hannity name also has enough national cachet to help broaden Kingston's fundraising reach. Which could become important if he makes the GOP primary runoff.

But more than anything, Hannity's endorsement could help Kington survive  the well-funded attacks certain to come his way over the next few week, attempting to damn him as just another Washington "appropriator" -- by pointing to his leadership on the House Appropriations Committee.
