President Barack Obama signed a major disaster declaration for Georgia on Friday, unlocking federal money to help pay back state and local governments and certain nonprofits for recovery efforts they undertook following severe storms and flooding late last year.

The White House said the funding is meant to help share the costs for emergency work and the repair and replacement of facilities damaged by severe storms that slammed the region just before Christmas. The money is also available for statewide efforts to limit the risk to people and property from future natural disasters.

The following counties are eligible for the money, which flows through the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA: Baker, Carroll, Chattahoochee, Crawford, Dade, Decatur, Douglas, Fannin, Fayette, Gilmer, Greene, Haralson, Harris, Jeff Davis, Lamar, Macon, Marion, Meriwether, Montgomery, Morgan, Muscogee, Newton, Oglethorpe, Pickens, Stewart, Talbot, Taliaferro, Taylor, Towns, Troup, Upson, Webster and Wilkes.
