WASHINGTON -- Former House speaker Newt Gingrich is the subject of a new round of Donald Trump vice presidential buzz after Fox News announced it suspended its contract with the ex-Georgia lawmaker in order to avoid a potential conflict of interest.
For a few days, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence was receiving the lion's share of the spotlight, but the timing of the announcement from the cable network had many in the political world talking.
Fox News Executive Vice President Jay Wallace said the network made the move because of media speculation that Gingrich could be selected as Trump's running mate. He did not address why it took the channel so long to make the move. Gingrich, after all, has been in the middle of VP speculation for weeks.
Gingrich was planning hold a Facebook Live event on Tuesday afternoon but later postponed it due to a "scheduling conflict."
The political world continues to wait for Trump to announce his pick for his No. 2. A name is expected to emerge by Friday, if not earlier. The billionaire is holding a rally with Pence in Indiana this evening.
