From mass shootings across the country, the Black Lives Matter movement and the targeting of police officers, guns and the Second Amendment are a key topic of the 2016 presidential race.
A June poll by the Pew Research Center found 72 percent of those surveyed said gun policy is "very important" to their vote in 2016. That's more than those who said immigration, education or Social Security were top issues. Only the economy, terrorism, foreign policy and health care scored higher among voters' concerns.
Republican Donald Trump has said repeatedly that Democrat Hillary Clinton wants to "ban the Second Amendment," a claim that Clinton and her supporters describe as "laughable," although the Democratic nominee has called for what she said were "reasonable" gun control measures.
The debate comes as guns are flying off store shelves and the number of Americans with concealed weapons permits skyrockets. More than 14.5 million Americans can now legally carry firearms.
