In looking over the final few campaign disclosures trickling in on Election Day, one caught the eye of our AJC colleague James Salzer.

A report filed by Georgia Next, Inc., started by House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams, D-Atlanta, indicates the organization received a $500,000 check from businessman, philanthropist and Democratic financier George Soros.

That’s about 70 percent of everything Georgia Next raised this year, as of Oct. 25.

Unlike his Republican counterpart, the conservative Koch brothers, Soros hasn’t openly been a big giver in state races or local PACs in the past. But Salzer found Soros also contributed $6,300 to the unsuccessful gubernatorial campaign of state Sen. Jason Carter.

Georgia Next, by the way, collected about $700,000 this year to spend on the Democratic effort. Besides Soros, the group got big money from San Francisco lawyer Steven Phillips ($100,000) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers ($50,000).

You may remember we reported on Election Day that the Democrats received several big checks last month leading up to the vote, including $500,000 from President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn.
