An Atlanta police lieutenant fired in January died Friday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after fleeing a bank robbery, according to reports.
The Chicago Tribune reports Maurice Chester Dodd, 44, was fired from the Atlanta Police Department Jan. 22 after being charged with drunken driving. Dodd had been with Atlanta police for 12 years, according to an AJC story after the DUI arrest.
Dodd was visiting relatives in Matteson, Illinois, a suburb south of Chicago, when he robbed a BMO Harris Bank Friday, police said. During an ensuing police chase, Dodd was observed holding a gun to his head. After hearing a gunshot, police said Dodd's car, a 2003 Nissan, hit a utility pole and fence. No one else was hurt.
The death has been ruled a suicide.
Dodd is not suspected of other bank robberies.
A police officer at the bank saw a man leaving with a "wad of cash," the Tribune story says. A teller told the officer the suspect, who was seen leaving in the Nissan, had robbed the bank.
In the Tribune, Matteson Police Deputy Chief Rob Debeikis said it was unusual that a bank robbery suspect was identified as a former police officer.
“It threw us all for a loop, to be honest with you,” he said. “I’m over 25 years (as a police officer), and this is a first for me.”
