From the moment that I turned on the radio in my rental car as I boomed down the road from the Austin, Texas airport, it was obvious to me that this was a campaign trip that had to be made.
It wasn't the song "Texas Flood," but when Stevie Ray Vaughn popped out of the speakers, the sound of the longtime fan favorite in the Austin area seemed like a good sign as I raced across the Lone Star State.
I half wondered if Neal Boortz was having me followed, because when I hit the Texas A&M campus (his alma mater,) instead of driving around aimlessly looking for my destination, I stopped and asked a University Police officer for directions. He responded by giving me an escort to where former President Bill Clinton was having an event.
Mike Huckabee came to Texas A&M in the last few days and had what was described to me by one A&M official as "a big event." I don't know how it compared to Bill Clinton, but for something that evidently got almost no publicity and was set up only two days ago, the former President drew hundreds and hundreds to a standing room only rally.
In fact, people lined up around the Texas A&M basketball stadium and stood in rain showers for over an hour just to get a chance to cheer for Hillary's husband.
The crowd had its fair share of students, which was to be expected, but it also had a lot of pretty regular people. Fathers in baseball hats, jeans and boots; working man stuff. Lots of mothers with their pre-teen daughters in tow. A lot of very energized middle aged women.
One oddity that I noted right away. I drove almost 250 miles today in Texas. I did not see one, single Obama for President sign.
Now, why the mention about Katie Tunstall in the blog headline? Because her song "Suddenly I See" gets played at just about every political rally that I have attended in the past two months.
I heard it on the radio a few weeks ago while driving to Richmond, Virginia to see John McCain and had a good laugh on I-95, because it was another Primary Campaign Coverage Signal.
Sure enough, the first song that the sound crew played at the Bill Clinton event was Katie Tunstall's "Suddenly I See."
Suddenly I see (Suddenly I see)
This is what I wanna be
Suddenly I see (Suddenly I see)
Why the hell it means so much to me
