"Hidden Figures," set mostly in Hampton, Va. but filmed mostly in metro Atlanta, is among the films up for a best-picture Oscar.

The movie stars Octavia Spencer (who is up for a best supporting actress Oscar), Taraji P. Henson and Janelle Monae as Dorothy Vaughan, Katherine Johnson and Mary Jackson, three women integral to NASA's early missions. They faced institutional gender and racial barriers even as they performed mathematical functions vital to sending John Glenn safely into orbit.
