Tracee Ellis Ross makes history
The movie - starring Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris, Trevante Rhodes, André Holland and Atlanta's Janelle Monáe - follows a young boy, Chiron, raised by a drug-addicted mother in a rough Miami neighborhood through adolescence and into adulthood.
During an interview with the AJC last year, Harris talked about the rigorous preparation she underwent to embody the role of Chiron's crack-addled mother.
"I just did a ton of research," she said. "I watched YouTube documentaries about crack addiction and Liberty City. I used all of the information I gathered and then I started to create a narrative for her. I wanted to demonstrate how these drugs ravage the body."
Rhodes plays an adult Chiron, and said he related to the character.
"At some point everyone has that moment of insecurity," he said. Like Jenkins, he hopes the movie has meaning for all viewers and hopes it leaves audiences with a powerful takeawy: "I hope people develop a love for humanity."
