Oakhurst center is getting a new spot for Chinese food, courtesy of the team behind Decatur's Taiyo Ramen and Suzy Siu's Baos at Krog Street Market.

Michael Lo and George Yu plan to open Double Dragon at 350 Mead Road -- the former home of Italian restaurant Saba -- this May. The restaurant's name is a play on historically uninspired Chinese restaurant names while also paying homage to the owners’ favorite 80’s arcade game.

"Double Dragon will be our homage to classic American Chinese food, as we remember it during its glorious days in the 1980s," Lo said in an email. "As second generation Chinese American restaurateurs, both George and I remember people getting dressed up on weekends and going out to dine at our families’ Chinese restaurants, making a special gourmet night out of it."

The menu will feature American Chinese staples including General Tso’s chicken, mongolian beef, egg rolls and hot and sour soup as well as more authentic fare such as lobster Cantonese. All food will be made with local and organic ingredients from businesses including Global Growers, Riverview Farms, Aluma Farm and Finch Creek Farms. The menu will also offer gluten-free and vegetarian options will offer take-out and delivery in addition to dine-in service.

The bar program will highlight craft beers, custom cocktails and Tiki drinks "because for some reason, everyone wants to drink over-the-top Polynesian cocktails when eating Chinese food, so who are we to deny them that?” Lo said.

The restaurant is slated to open in May 2017.

Double Dragonis one of three projects Lo and Yu are anticipating opening this year -- they also have Noona, a Korean steakhous e, in the works at Parsons Alley in Duluth and Ramen Station at the Larkin on Memoral development.

Want a preview of Double Dragon? The team will be serving up Chinese BBQ ribs at this year’s Smoke & Glory event at Steinbeck’s this Sunday, April 2 from noon-4pm.
