Popular Athens-based brewery, Terrapin Beer Co., and the Atlanta Braves have announced a new Terrapin Taproom and brewery , set to open at the Battery Atlanta adjacent to SunTrust Park, the soon-to-be new home of the Braves in Cobb County .

The Taproom, a restaurant operated by Delaware North, will feature a full menu of barbecue from Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q, which hosted a preview reception with Terrapin and the Braves at the original Fox Bros. location on DeKalb Ave. in Atlanta.

Perhaps the biggest news for beer geeks will be the opening of the ATL Brew Lab, a 5-barrel pilot brewery, where Terrapin will experiment with new styles, collaborations and one-off beers that will be available first, and sometimes exclusively, in the Taproom.

"We're really excited to be able to brew on this smaller system," said Brian “Spike” Buckowski, Terrapin co-founder and vice president of brewing development. "It's going to allow us to make some really crazy beers and many different beers you haven't had from Terrapin.

"Of course, all of the regular Terrapin beers will be available in the Taproom and the ballpark. But what Brew Lab is going to allow us to do is come up with new recipes and new beers. And what will be exciting is that people can come out to the Battery and hang out a try those beers. Terrapin has never had a pilot system, so this will let us get really creative."

Both the Terrapin Taproom and the ATL Brew Lab will be located outside the right field gate entrance and be open to the public year-round. Construction will begin in November, and the Terrapin Taproom and ATL Brew Lab are set to open at the start of the 2017 Braves season.

In July,  MillerCoors struck a deal to take a majority stake in Terrapin , a move that was noted in this morning's press release from the Braves:

The Terrapin Taproom and ATL Brew Lab are the result of a multiyear partnership between the Atlanta Braves and MillerCoors. Following the recent acquisition of Terrapin last month by Tenth and Blake, the craft and imports division of MillerCoors, Terrapin was immediately picked to become the flagship craft brewery for the ballpark because of its strong local ties to the state.

“We wanted to partner with Terrapin because they’ve been crafting beers right up the road in Athens and have developed a strong southern following, so we knew right away they would be a natural fit with the Braves,” said Derek Schiller, Braves president, business. “The Terrapin Taproom will pair Terrapin’s freshest and newest beers with some down-home southern barbecue, which is sure to excite all of Braves Country.”
