The holidays are upon us, and Monday Night Brewing’s newly canned seasonal, Bourbon Barrel-Aged Drafty Kilt Scotch Ale is this week’s Beer Pick.

Beer Pick

Bourbon Barrel-Aged Drafty Kilt Scotch Ale

Monday Brewing Co., Atlanta

Available in four-pack cans and other variations.

Profile

Monday Night’s original Scotch ale-style Drafty Kilt was originally a homebrew recipe. But the bourbon barrel-aged version won a gold medal at the 2014 Great American Beer festival. And now it’s a holiday seasonal, available in cans and soon to be released in a number variants, including cinnamon cocoa coffee, tiramisu, maple bacon, and apple cinnamon.

The original features deep flavors of cherrywood-smoked malt, chocolate malt and roasted barley, with moderate bitterness and a bit of vanilla and butterscotch. Barrel-aging reveals more of the smokiness and sweetness and, of course, a lovely hint of bourbon. Perfect for a cold winter evening.

Pair with

In the past, Monday Night has recommended pairing Draft Kilt with chocolate, smoked meats and strong cheese. But I think the bourbon barrel-aged version makes great match for desserts, including leftover pumpkin or pecan pie and Christmas cookies.
