With this win, the 22-year-old Georgia Southern University graduate scored himself a recording contract and guidance for his music career under the mentorship of country star and “The Voice” judge Blake Shelton. Shall we rewind a little bit to get to know all about Leatherwood? Let’s do it!

Born and raised in Woodstock, Leatherwood grew up visiting his grandfather’s farm, which seems to be where his love for country music began. The pair rode around listening to country music, and soon after, in 7th grade at Dean Rusk Middle School, Leatherwood turned his love for country music into actually singing it! He carried that love into college at GSU, where he recently graduated with his business degree. Leatherwood also got plenty of on-stage experience, as he regularly performed on the college bar scene.

Fast forward to Leatherwood getting a shot on “The Voice” – during the blind audition, he was able to turn three chairs but ultimately ended up going to Team Blake. “He’s (Blake Shelton) one of a kind, and he’s a great human being who really likes me,” Leatherwood said. Shelton just might have that magic touch because Leatherwood’s win marks a record-breaking ninth victory for Shelton, who will unfortunately be stepping away from the hit NBC singing competition series for the first time in 11 years following the next season.

“It’s just so humbling to know that people love Bryce Leatherwood,” Leatherwood told PEOPLE. “People love what I stand for. People love my music and how I sang. It took me by surprise that America chose me. I just think my goal in life is to make people happy, and America made me happy today. I’m very excited to be ‘The Voice’ champion of season 22.”
