Wondering what to buy during upcoming Memorial Day sales? Here's some advice from the experts at Ben's Bargains, who mined historical data to uncover this year's trends and help you figure out what to buy and what to avoid in specific merchandise categories.
CLOTHING
Buy: Spring clothing which will have discounts of up to 90 percent at retailers like Old Navy, Macy's, Target and more.
Avoid: Summer clothing which has just been released and may have modest discounts of 20 – 40 percent off, but will be much cheaper (particularly swimwear) at the end of the summer.
ELECTRONICS
Buy: At Home Depot, Sears, Lowe's and other retailers expect to see between 25 and 65 percent off major and minor appliances.
Avoid: Do not shop for laptops, televisions and other electronics. Wait until August to buy laptops during back-to-school sales and wait for television sales in November.
GRILLS
Buy: If you're in the market for a tabletop gas grill, go for it and look for one starting at $50.
Picnic Time® Portagrillo Portable Gas Grill, $145 at Kohl’s.
Avoid: Gas Grills: Discounts on gas grills will range up to 20 percent this weekend, but that doesn't compare to the 40 -75 percent sales that will pop up in August or September.
FURNITURE
Buy: Summer temps will put you in the mindset to splurge on outdoor furniture, but focus on sleep instead of sun. Mattresses are up to 80 percent off on Memorial Day at Sears, Macy's and mattress retailers.
Avoid: Wait to buy patio furniture until late July or early August and you will find more substantial discounts. It could mean the difference between 20 – 30 percent off or 50- 70 percent off.
