Coachella kicks off on April 10 launching the start of music festival season — which has become a fashion event all its own.

Not only do young celebrities have Oscar red carpet moments, they also now have a Coachella moment, says Meg Councilman, designer and founder of Margaret Vera artisan leather bags and jewelry.

Retailers like Free People, Target, Kohl’s, Topshop and others, all curate selections specifically for festival-goers.

While boho-chic remains the go-to style for music festivals, certain themes do stand out.

“In years past, we have seen the influence of the sixties. This year it is all about the 70’s,”  says Councilman. “Denim head-to-toe is huge. Flare legged pants are huge. Birkenstocks are huge.”

Add kimonos and ponchos to the mix and throw on a pair of platform shoes with wood or cork heels and you’re ready to go, she says.

A perennial festival favorite is the maxi dresses and fringe — on bags, on shoes,on jackets, etc. — is another sure bet.

While retailers make it easy to buy a head-to-toe look, there are some ways to hit the right festival note without spending a lot of money.

“You can always go to mom or dad or grandma’s closet and get a look,” Councilman says. “When I was younger I would go to a thrift or consignment store and find a cute kimono for less. You just have to look around. It may not be as compartmentalized as Free People, for example, but it can be fun to create your own look.”
