Texans’ J.J. Watt’s Houston recovery fund surpasses $5 million

Many observers believe you can put a blanket over Houston, Tennessee and Indianapolis because their talent bases are that close. We demur. The Texans have a terrific defense that gets back the incomparable Watt and could be enough to overcome a mediocre offense with an unproven QB and suspect passing game. They are well coached and rarely beat themselves, until the playoffs, that is.(AP Photo/Eric Christian Smith, File)

What started as a YouCaring page with a goal of $200,000 has blossomed and provided more help than imagined for the city of Houston and those affected by Hurricane Harvey.

Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt’s fundraiser for the city of Houston has collected over $5 million in less than three days.

On Wednesday morning, Watt posted a video on Twitter thanking those who donated for reaching $5.1 million.

In an earlier video on Twitter, Watt said the money will go directly to the people of Houston who need help after the devastation caused by the hurricane and flooding over the past week.

On Tuesday morning, Watt's YouCaring page totaled just over $1 million. Early Wednesday monring, it had reached $5.12 million.

Part of Tuesday’s nearly $4 million contrubutions came from Tennessee Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk, who donated $1 million to Watt’s fund.

“The NFL, at the end of the day, is a family that helps one another in times of need,” said Strunk, a native of Houston. “J.J. has created a dynamic where boots will be on the ground with immediate aid to those who need it. The Titans want to be a part of his effort to help the Houston community as it rebuilds. I talked with him earlier today and he was very appreciative. We discussed his plans and I know he is determined to help as many people as he can.”
