All week at Emory University, monks have spent hours creating intricate pieces of art that represent the beauty of their culture. On Saturday, it will all be destroyed.

It's a tradition honored by the Tibetan Buddhists from the Drepung Loseling Monastery in Atlanta, where monks work eight hour days Monday through Friday to build an elaborate sand mandala that will be dismantled soon after.

The monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastery began the White Tara piece on Monday and will conclude the work Friday evening.

The group performed the same ritual in February at Oxford College Library near Covington, live-streaming the entire process online. This time, they are helping Emory celebrate Tibet Week, which is from March 20 - March 25.

Since Monday, participants have flocked the school’s Michael C. Carlos Museum to attend guided passion meditations, topical discussions and the live mandala sand painting exhibition of the White Tara piece, which represents longevity and healing.

On Saturday, they will conclude Tibet Week with a closing ceremony and the dismantlement of the mandala.
