Family of grandmother killed in hit-and-run asks driver to come forward

A 70-year-old woman was killed when she was hit by two vehicles in northwest Atlanta on Friday night, police said.

The first vehicle that struck the woman, identified by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office as Marcella O. Bellamy, did not stop, according to police.

Investigators think Bellamy was walking in a lane of travel on James Jackson Parkway near Proctor Drive when she was hit. She lived in the area, the medical examiner’s office said.

“A second vehicle struck the female a short time after the first,” Atlanta police Sgt. John Chafee told Channel 2 Action News. “Occupants of the second vehicle contacted police and assisted investigators.”

Officers responding about 10:15 p.m. found Bellamy dead at the scene.

Bellamy was a grandmother and one of eight sisters, her niece Tabitha Boyce told the news station, and she always brought laughter to family gatherings. Bellamy recently learned she was cancer-free, the second time she had beaten the disease.

“That lady was a ball of fire,” Boyce said.

Police are still trying to identify the driver of the first vehicle, described as a dark-colored SUV driven by a woman wearing a blue uniform. Boyce said she has forgiven the driver, and she hopes the woman can forgive herself and surrender to police.

Her family still wants answers, Boyce said. She is hoping anyone else with information will come forward.

“We needed the community to know that she was somebody, and she was loved,” Boyce told Channel 2.
