A new street in downtown Sandy Springs will be named for Dr. Leila Daughtry Denmark, a local pediatrician who was the world’s oldest practicing physician when she retired at the age of 103.

The City Council on Aug. 1 approved "Denmark Drive" as the name of the connector between Boylston Drive and Roswell Road. The city in January awarded an $878,050 contract to build the street, located near the new City Springs complex that includes the new city hall.

According to a family website, Denmark, who died in 2012 at the age of 114, had a role in developing a vaccine for pertussis (whooping cough) and wrote a book on childrearing, “Every Child Should Have a Chance.”
