Gwinnett ‘Jail Dog’ still looking for home after 3 years

A Gwinnett County “jail dog” doesn’t have a criminal history, but all he wants is to be in custody — of a loving home.

Bandit, an Anatolian shepherd, has been waiting for a home for three years, according to the Gwinnett County Jail Dogs program. The program is a partnership between the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office and the Society of Humane Friends of Georgia. Dogs are saved from Gwinnett County Animal Control and trained by inmates to get them ready for adoption.

Bandit joined the jail dogs program more than three years ago. He was infected with heartworms, a dangerous parasite, and had an adverse reaction to his treatment. The reaction permanently paralyzed his back legs.

At first, Bandit had to be carried to do most things normal dogs do, like socializing with people and other dogs. He’s been outfitted with a custom set of wheeled “legs” that help him move around, but he still needs 24/7 care and manual assistance to go to the bathroom, according to the jail dogs program.

Despite his disability, Bandit is a happy, healthy dog, the program said. He likes kids and gets along with some other dogs. He needs a home where someone can take care of him at all times, the program said.
