The family of Ernest Tyrrell Bing, a father of four, recalls him as a protector, one who died while “heroically” trying to stop a fight in DeKalb County.

“He spent his entire life fighting for what he believed in — to include protecting ‘the little guy,’ even up until his very last day,” the obituary for the 40-year-old Alpharetta resident, who worked in the music industry, said.

Bing, who also went by Adan Asim Tyrrell Samaad, died following a shooting this past Friday at a Texaco gas station in the city of Clarkston.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Bing and another patron of the East Ponce de Leon Avenue store were shot as two other people fought. The other victim survived.

The GBI, which is searching for a man believed to have information on the situation, hasn't confirmed that Bing was attempting to break up the fight, only that he became involved. But Channel 2 Action News quoted investigators saying he was shot while trying to stop the scuffle.

The obituary said everyone knew the victim as a great man.

He was an Atlantic City, New Jersey, native, who excelled in basketball as a young man and in music later in life as a manager, producer and composer, the obituary said.

The funeral is Wednesday in Atlantic City.
