A DeKalb County teen was found guilty of murder in the death of a man shot when a crew robbed him of his cell phone, the district attorney’s office announced Friday.
Abijah Richards, 18, was convicted of being the shooter who fired on 26-year-old Leevon Daniels in downtown Lithonia in May 2015. Co-defendants Monolito Walker, 18, and Mohamed Kamara, 19, pleaded guilty last month to voluntary manslaughter.
The victim was hanging out with friends at a sports bar on Main Street when he stepped outside to call his girlfriend.
The trio had been driving around breaking into cars when they saw him, the DA’s office said. Walker got out and demanded the phone.
The victim threw it at him, but Richards shot anyway, instantly killing Daniels, according to authorities.
Judge Daniel Coursey sentenced Richards to life plus 15 years.
Kamara was sentenced to 30 years to serve 20 without parole. Walker was sentenced to 30 years to serve 20, including the first 10 years without parole.
