The GBI is expanding its morgue in DeKalb County, increasing the agency’s ability to handle death investigations.

The GBI broke ground on the morgue addition Thursday, which will help the Medical Examiner’s Office deal with a growing volume of cases as Georgia’s population grows.

The morgue currently can hold about 50 bodies, Channel 2 Action News reported in June. The expansion will allow it to take on about 60 more bodies.

The GBI Medical Examiner’s Office provides forensic pathology services to 153 of the state’s 159 counties, according to a press release from the agency. The GBI has locations near Decatur, Savannah and Macon.
