The GBI is investigating after a car chase through Barrow County Sunday ended in the driver’s death.

A driver of a Chevy Camaro was found dead in his vehicle once it came to a stop near the intersection of Loganville Highway at Ga. 316, Barrow County sheriff’s spokesman Capt. Ryan Sears said. Deputies believe the man shot himself in the head before they approached.

“The scene was secured and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was contacted to assist with the investigation,” Sears said in a news release. “The driver of the Camaro was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased from the self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

He is not being identified.

Sears said the chase started when officers with the Winder Police Department tried to pull the Camaro over for a suspended registration on South Broad Street.

“The driver of the Camaro failed to yield to the Winder officer and Barrow County Sheriff’s Office deputies took the lead of the pursuit while it was traveling southbound on Loganville Highway,” Sears said.

When the chase reached Ga. 316, the Camaro encountered stopped traffic, he said. The driver attempted to make a U-turn and the car became stuck in a muddy construction area.

Deputies swarmed the car and broke out a window in order to take the driver into custody, Sears said, but he was already dead.

No further details were released.
