Driver dead, hotel worker injured in Midtown parking garage crash

A Volkswagen crashed into the wall of a parking garage at Midtown’s Colony Square Mall early Sunday evening, plowing into the adjacent hotel and injuring a worker.

The man driving the car was dead at the scene, authorities said.

According to information released by Atlanta police and fire officials, a witness saw the Volkswagen Eos 3.2 traveling “at a very high rate of speed” before running into the wall at the parking garage, located near the intersection of Peachtree and 14th streets. The car went through the wall and about 20 feet into the adjacent W Atlanta-Midtown, where it hit a hotel worker in a storage area.

The worker was treated for non-life threatening injuries, Atlanta police spokeswoman Kim Jones said.

Other hotel workers “pulled the [driver] out of the car and attempted CPR,” fire department spokesman Cortez Stafford said, but their efforts were unsuccessful. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

“Atlanta police is investigating the incident,” Stafford said in an emailed statement, “and it has yet to be determined exactly what happened or why the male ran into the wall.”

The crash happened around 5:30 p.m. The driver’s identity was not released Sunday night.
