Grandfather Mountain
Grandfather Mountain is a major landmark as well as a key destination because of its 12-plus miles of hiking trails and Mile-High Swinging Bridge. It’s the highest peak (5,946 feet) in the Blue Ridge Mountains. A few minutes’ drive away is the Blowing Rock, a huge cliff above the Johns River Gorge. Strong currents of air rushing up through the gorge have made Blowing Rock known as “the only place in the world where snow falls upside down.”
