When the Oscar nominations came out Thursday, the only Georgia produced film, short or documentary to get a nomination was Tyler Perry’s Netflix historical drama “The Six Triple Eight” for best original song “The Journey” written by renowned songwriter Diane Warren and sung by H.E.R.

None of the nominated actors have strong Georgia ties.

The near shut out was not completely unexpected. Just one actor was in the conversation: Atlanta actor Danielle Deadwyler for her fiery role as Berniece in the Netflix film adaptation of the August Wilson play “The Piano Lesson.”

Deadwyler has already received wins from several movie critic associations. Among her supporting actress wins so far: Black Film Critics Circle, Boston Society of Film Critics, Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association, African American Film Critics Association, Georgia Film Critics Association and Ohio Film Critics Association. She is also nominated for best supporting actress by the Screen Actors Guild and the NAACP Image Awards.

“We thought she was a shoo-in” for Oscar supporting actress in a drama, said Robyn Watson, president of Women in Film and Television Atlanta. “She was our best chance.”

“The Six Triple Eight” about the only Black female battalion during World War II has gotten minimal notice from critics beyond the song nomination. The movie, which was partially shot in metro Atlanta, has five nominations from the NAACP Image Awards, including best motion picture.

The Oscars will reveal its winners on Sunday, March 2 and air on ABC with Conan O’Brien as the host.
