Chicago has a lot to offer besides hotdogs and football during the holiday season. The city has its own unique way of celebrating, with festive activities throughout the season.

From dazzling light shows, world-class shopping, art exhibits and more, the perfect Christmas getaway is just a two-hour plane ride away.

The Windy City is known for its traditional celebrations — like the Museum of Science and Industry’s annual Christmas Around the World and Holiday Lights exhibits, which date back to 1942.

Here are a few more things going on this holiday season:

Light up the city

Brookfield Zoo brings back its annual Holiday Magic display, including a 600-foot-long lighted tunnel.

In addition to the zoo, there are plenty of other dazzling light displays, including the Lightscape at Chicago Botanic Garden, Illumination: Tree Lights at The Morton Arboretum and Navy Pier’s Light Up the Lake.

Skate the night away

There’s no need to fight for the best spot on the ice rink when there are so many places to chose from. Enjoy festive music, hot cocoa and other activities while skating at Scenic Rink at Millennium Park, Skating Ribbon at Maggie Daley Park and Gallagher Way Rink in Wrigleyville.

Magical hotel accommodations

Chicago’s hotels ready for the holidays too. The Godfrey Hotel, for example, features a Winter Wonderland experience under an igloo shaped dome with festive drinks, s’mores and more.

The Peninsula Chicago is back with the Merry & Bright Holiday Package (ideal for couples) and Holly Jolly Family Holiday Package (great for families). And the hotel’s legendary afternoon tea gets a festive makeover with a 20-foot Christmas tree and lavish holiday décor.

The Emily Hotel, meanwhile, welcomes guest for an incredible rooftop curling experience, complete with an overnight stay for two, curling for two players and two complimentary cocktails.
