Photos: Historic neoclassical home blends Buckhead family’s past and present

The columned neoclassical estate with a Victorian-style wraparound porch was built in 1921 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. The residence, which they call Halcyon Oaks, will host the Buckhead Heritage Society's Annual Holiday Party on Dec. 13.

The living room's Chinese red walls are layered with gold glaze to create depth of hue, said homeowner and retired interior designer Daphne Eaton. The tapestries in the living room were purchased by her parents in New Orleans.

The library opens to a bar in the Buckhead home. In 1977, the Eatons added a two-story addition that includes the library behind the living room.

The office was part of a second rear addition and completed with beadboard and a beamed ceiling.

The pool was added by Daphne Eaton's parents, and she and her husband converted it to a saltwater pool when they moved into the home.

For the eclectic interiors, Daphne Eaton blended Georgian, Chippendale, Empire and other traditional dark wood styles with Asian art and artifacts, family portraits, heirlooms and collections of travel mementos. The hatch-cover coffee table was purchased by the couple in California in the 1970s.

The renovated kitchen has granite countertops and backsplash and extra features, such an extra row of cabinets and a pass-through to the pantry.

The kitchen was expanded and updated in 2000 with cabinets painted a custom cream blend, an island with a reclaimed wood top and granite perimeter countertops.

The butler's pantry, which includes an American Standard farmhouse sink and an extra dishwasher, is accessible to the dining room, kitchen and a catering entrance to the driveway. The countertop is made of reclaimed heart pine.

The solarium, which was added by Daphne Eaton's parents when they enclosed what was a screened porch with glass, is a more contemporary element in the neoclassical Buckhead estate.

The home displays an array of keepsakes from various travels and family members. The Italian figures of Samurai warriors were collected by homeowner Daphne Eaton's parents.

A 12-foot-long Japanese screen in gold leaf is one of the many heirlooms in the 1921 Buckhead home. Homeowner and retired interior designer Daphne Eaton said she's drawn to the color of Asian art. Her mother, Elisabeth (Bettsie) Berry, designed the chair rail with applied paneling in the room.

A checked chaise provides a space to lounge by the fireplace in one of the four bedrooms in the Buckhead residence.

Architect Keith Summerour suggested a Juliet balcony when he renovated the upstairs master suite. "The minute he said that, we said, 'Cha-ching, we're going to go for a balcony there,'" Daphne Eaton said. The balcony even once served as a spot for a family wedding.

The master bathroom was renovated in 2000 with details such as marble countertops, tile with a Greek key design and pocket doors. A balcony was added, instead of double windows.

Asian art and colorful rugs blend with blue-and-white furnishings and porcelain in the living spaces and bedrooms.

Updates by Keith Summerour and Laura Howard modernized the home in a way that the older architectural features were embedded in the newer work, Boyd Eaton said. "They maintained the spirit and the atmosphere of what was there before," he said.

Dr. Boyd Eaton and his wife, Daphne, moved into her family's longtime Buckhead home in 1977. Boyd now is a retired radiologist and co-author of "The Paleolithic Prescription," and Daphne is a retired interior designer.
