PHOTOS: Cobb County reno takes 1970s ranch-style home to a new level

A trellis with climbing roses frames the oversized stained cedar doors on the garage, which now has a bonus room above it. The exterior uses Sherwin-Williams' Worldly Gray on the board and batten, Behr's Drift Gray for the cedar shake and Sherwin-Williams' Alabaster for the trim.

The home in Marietta's Indian Hills Country Club has 4,500 square feet, six bedrooms, five-and-a-half baths. Built in 1972, it was renovated in 2015, and the 8-foot mahogany front door with glass panes is where the original garage was located. Favorite features are the parterre courtyard with a fountain, eyebrow front porch with double columns and oval Craftsman windows.

The shed was made out of salvaged pieces of the original house. The doors, roof and even the porch lights were kept and reused from the Marietta renovation.

The Williams wanted a room anyone in the family could use as a hangout space. They built it on top of the relocated garage so noise wouldn't be an issue. With a sectional from Rooms To Go, a puzzle table from Wayfair and plenty of pillows from Etsy.com, the space is fitting for a family movie night or a sleepover. On the landing, Ikea shelves are fitted to look custom next to a craft table that Valerie and her grandfather made out of reclaimed wood from the North Carolina mountains and a vintage Singer sewing machine. The faux hide rug is from Tuesday Morning and the library sconces are from Wayfair.

The guest bathroom was part of the original house, but it needed a coat of paint and new mirrors and accessories.

Valerie Williams' father made several lamps out of old fire hydrants when he was a newlywed, and they're now featured in her family's Cobb County home.

During the renovation, the Williams added an office for Valerie. Her acrylic desk is from HomeGoods and the sunburst mirror is from Cost Plus World Market.

Valerie Williams achieves a transitional style by using antiques and heirlooms, such as the side tables, alongside more modern furniture, like the Wayfair coffee table and chairs. A fiddle-leaf fig tree in front of French doors and guitars on display add liveliness to the living room.

In the powder room, Valerie Williams turned an heirloom bachelor's chest into a vanity. The marble backsplash and countertop were custom made.

Valerie Williams said she loved the way the way her friend, interior designer Kristin Jackson, decorated the master bedroom, and it inspired the design style she carried out in the home, particularly with the use of blue accents. In daughter Ashlynn's bathroom, Valerie Williams mixes metals to create a bold look balanced with delicate floral art and a white marble countertop.

Among the top priorities in the renovation was the desire for separate wings to give the girls space as they get older. Adyson's headboard is from Wayfair and the textiles are from Ballard Designs.

In the keeping room, a faux tortoise shell, from RH, hangs over a wood-burning gas fireplace. The Williams matched the flooring to the original, 2-inch-thick oak floors. A guest bedroom is made cozy for guests with a bed from Z Gallerie and linens from Bed Bath & Beyond.

Chris and Valerie Williams moved into the 1972 ranch in 2015 with their daughters Ashlynn, 9, and Adyson, 7, and their 10-year-old golden retriever, Georgia. Chris works for Autodesk and Valerie works in medical device sales.
