West Elm is the homeowner's go-to store for classic, comfortable furniture with clean lines, including the gray sectional in the living room. The advent calendar is as old as the homeowner's 16-year-old son. In each door are fabric ornaments that the family opens and put on the tree on top. Text by Lori Johnston/Fast Copy News Service.

The Santa on the mantel, flanked by lanterns and reindeer statues, was on the homeowner's mantel when she was growing up. "I love that he's woodsy and rustic," Jen Newman said.

The layout has spaces for her kids to hang out with their friends to watch movies or play video games. The couch is from West Elm, and the color fits with the homeowner's love for red during the holidays. Jen Newman previously sold folk art at her store, Square Roots, in downtown Decatur, including pieces by John "Cornbread" Anderson, whose work is in the stairway.

Seasonal decor and folk art infuse color, while throws and pillows bring in a cozy, lodge look. The walls are painted Sherwin-Williams' Agreeable Gray.

The homeowner's favorite piece of furniture is the table made out of salvaged pieces: exterior barn walls for the top and banisters from a home for the legs. Homeowner Jen Newman, who previously owned a Decatur folk art shop called Square Roots, didn't want the furniture to be uniform, so she paired wooden seating with chairs upholstered in a starfish fabric. The light fixture is from World Market.

The kitchen's clean and neutral palette, with granite countertops and subway tile backsplash, was just what Jen Newman desired. "You can add your own sense of style to it. I think your accessories should speak, not the background." She culled the HOME letters from various vendors at Kudzu Antiques + Modern, and the "M" is actually a "W" upside down.

For a high-low purchase, she mixed and matched the island stools. Two are made from gears by a local artist and purchased from Kudzu Antiques, and two are from World Market. She also was surprised to find that the island legs nearly matched those of her custom dining table, made of salvaged banisters.

The "bright and happy" main space is where Jen Newman and her kids often hang out together. "We cook, chat, dine and lounge together in this special place," she said.

Fresh flowers and candles - two key ingredients in the home's holiday attire - decorate a table that the homeowner commissioned from an artist, using salvaged barn wood.

The home was renovated by previous owners in 2014, who added the staircase. "I love how there is the open staircase in the middle of the house. It's one of my favorite parts of the house," said Jen Newman.

For Christmas, homeowner Jen Newman blends favorite elements, including a handmade soy Himalayan candle, fresh flowers, photos and sparkle. The home is on the Avondale Estates Christmas Tour of Homes on Dec. 9.

Salvaged materials, including a window, lend a primitive air to a handcrafted table in the living room, topped with a vase and small tree from Intown Ace Hardware-Decatur.

Homeowner and mom Jen Newman snagged the creamy "cuddle chair" from HomeGoods. "When you get in it, it hugs you. We all fight over it," she said. The rest of the open living space has a mix of handcrafted items and pops of blue, red and green.

During the year, the interiors are comfortable and classic with touch of eclectic, said homeowner Jen Newman, with furniture from West Elm, HomeGoods and handcrafted items. For the holiday season, she brings in accessories with a rustic and whimsical vibe. The home is on the Avondale Estates Christmas Tour of Homes on Dec. 9.

Shabby chic sets the scene for daughter Lilly Newman's room. She designed her bedroom with a pink palette, fuzzy pillows, and whimsical accessories and art. Text by Lori Johnston/Fast Copy News Service.

The master bedroom's decor is contemporary yet cozy. "I think color changes the mood. For me, blue, and gray, is really soothing," she said. She built the headboard by drawing and cutting the pattern on plywood and covering it with fabric. The wood bird is made out of old piano keys by Dryads Dancing, a Chamblee company, and the signs are from Sugarboo & Co.

Jen Newman and her children, Lilly, 12, and Jake, 16, live in Avondale Estates with their pets including dogs, Luna, a Weimaraner, and Drew "Breesy," a Boston Terrier, and a cat, Daphanie. .
