Paul Newman: A life in photos

The bluest eyes, the truest heart

A longtime neighbor and business partner confirmed that Paul Newman is undergoing treatment for cancer. "Everybody is hopeful. That's all we know," A.E. Hotchner said of the actor's prognosis. Newman's famous blue eyes (seen here at age 70) inspired us to put together this ode to other sexy seniors (age 65 and over).

Newman earned the first of his nine Academy Award nominations starring as "Brick" opposite Elizabeth Taylor's "Maggie" in the screen adaptation of Tennessee Williams' "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" (1958).

Newman met Joanne Woodward while the pair appeared together in the 1953 Broadway production of "Picnic." Five years later, after Newman was granted a divorce by his first wife, the pair married and remained so ever since.

In 1961, Newman embarked on a string of films that would earn him Oscar nominations. Among his most memorable of roles was that of a risk-taking billiards prodigy in "The Hustler".

Newman's devoted wife Joanne Woodward proved to be an accomplished actress in her own right, earning an Oscar nomination in the Newman-directed "Rachel, Rachel". In 1963, the starred together in the romantic spoof, "A New Kind of Love."

Starring opposite Patricia Neal in the 1963 modern western drama "Hud," Newman turned his first role as a callous villain into another Oscar nomination.

Among Newman's most memorable roles was that of a devil-may-care drifter who raises the spirits of his fellow inmates in a prison camp. He earned an Oscar nomination as "Cool Hand Luke."

Far from a one-dimensional personality, Newman developed a strong affinity for auto racing and even co-owned racing operations.

In 1987, Newman finally won his first Oscar for his role as an aging pool hustler who mentors Tom Cruise's character in "The Color of Money."

Though he barely stood taller than 5 feet, 9 inches, Newman never had trouble playing characters with towering presence and undeniable authority.

Newman was so embarrassed by his first film performance in 1954's "The Silver Chalice" that he took out a full-page ad in Variety magazine apologizing to anyone unfortunate enough to see it.

In his latter years, Newman remained devoted to his wife and their three daughters, to his charities and his fondness for racing.
