If you're a fan of marionettes and donating your time to creative causes, know that the Center for Puppetry Arts is always looking for volunteers.

People at least 16 years of age must pass a background check, which requires a $5 fee. Volunteer opportunities are available for greeters, create-a-puppet workshops, birthday parties, special events, administrative, house management and museum docents. Apply here.

For the younger ones, "Summer Teen Volunteers" are trained to interact with visitors, facilitate hands-on interpretive "Pop-up Puppet Carts" and work with families in interactive museum exhibitions. The Teen Volunteer Program is for students going into their freshman year of high school in the fall or older. Apply here (summer only).

All volunteers will get an invitation to an annual “Volunteer Appreciation Party” and “Staff Holiday Party.”

Those who volunteer regularly acquire the following benefits after the first 20 hours of service each year:
-Complimentary performance tickets
-Free museum admission
-10 percent off in the Museum Shop
-The ability to attend exclusive workshops and tours about puppetry

Benefits acquired after 40 hours of service:
-All of the above, plus special invitations to "Patron Parties"
-Ability to be "Volunteer of the Year" and receive tickets to the annual "String Fling Gala"

Then there's the "museum docent program," which trains adults to greet museum guests, lead tours and assist with special events. But it's not as easy as just filling out an application — although that is the first step.

Candidates must then attend weekly three-hour-long sessions for ten weeks. Meetings will include lessons about the museum’s mission, history and collection.

Volunteers must commit to the program for at least one year, volunteering for at least six hours a month.
