The health score of a Norcross Dairy Queen dropped dramatically because food was not being protected from contamination during a recent routine inspection.

Uncovered food items in an upright freezer were stored directly under a condensation leak and ice buildup. Water was leaking directly onto an open container of ice cream and open bags of chicken and hamburgers, according to a Gwinnett County health inspector. These foods were discarded.

Bags of bread were on racks adjacent to the hand sink where they were exposed to splash contamination. The inspector observed water droplets on the bread bags. Also, boxes of ice cream cakes were stored directly on the floor in the walk-in freezer.

Open bags of raw hamburgers were stored above opened bags of pre-cooked chicken and French fries in the freezer. Open bags of cut carrots and cut cabbage were stored in an unclean cardboard box that had been used to deliver tomatoes, the inspector noted.

Dairy Queen Grill & Chill, 4890 Peachtree Industrial Blvd., Norcross, scored a 30/U, dropping from previous scores of 93/A and 92/A.

The public health permit was suspended because the restaurant had more than nine food safety risk violations. The restaurant must submit a corrective action plan before the follow-up inspection.

Among other code violations, the ice machine had mold and a roach was found in a clean container.
